Dealing with the global plastic problem
We’re now concentrating all new product development on reusable items that are also plastic-free, and so providing more sustainable alternatives to high volume plastic products.
Single-use culture has gripped the world, and we all know it isn’t feasible to continue producing these vast quantities of products in the hope that they might be recycled at the end – whatever they’re made of. Recycling is beneficial, of course, however it is not a solution. The solution is to use less in the first place or preferably use nothing at all, creating less waste & less pollution, and that applies to the manufacture of everything from food, clothing, automotive, household goods, single-use coffee cups – everything, Did you know that, globally, humans use 1.2 million plastic plastic bottles per minute?
We started filling cans of water as a stop-gap, while we developed our refillable aluminium bottles, which are pre-filled with natural water. Cans are definitely still far more sustainable than plastic bottles or cartons (and we fill ours locally in Somerset, UK), so we’re keeping them in the mix, however they are still single-use and that’s a lot of raw materials and processing.
Reusable products will always be the better option and consumers need manufacturers to urgently start designing more sustainable options, so that’s what we’re doing - after all, you can only buy what is actually on being offered.
At The Whent, the focus isn’t about how many products you can produce. It’s on how you can produce the fewest items and promote the culture of re-use.
